What homeowners miss — and what we check first
Carpentry is where quotes are easiest to misread and finishes are easiest to regret. These are the five things we walk through with every client before the shop drawings are confirmed.
Drawers are not included in the per-foot price
A per-foot-run price covers the carcass and doors — drawers are an additional cost on top, because each one carries its own runners and box. Two quotes for "the same wardrobe" can differ purely because one includes six drawers and the other includes none. When you compare quotes, compare the internal fittings, not just the length. We itemise ours so you can see exactly what is inside.
ABS edging peeling next to the hob
The plastic edging on laminate cabinet doors can peel when it lives right beside the heat of an induction or gas hob. It is a slow failure — six months of cooking, then a lifted edge. The fix is planning, not repair: keep laminate edges out of the hottest zone, or choose a more heat-tolerant finish for the panels closest to the hob. We flag this on every kitchen layout.
Choosing laminate by colour alone
The surface finish matters as much as the colour swatch. Some laminates hold fingerprints and need constant wiping; others shrug them off. Matte, gloss and textured surfaces all clean differently and wear differently. Tell us how much upkeep you are honestly willing to do, and we will steer you to a surface that still looks good in year five, not just on day one.
Handles that rust before the carpentry ages
External handles are often the first thing on a cabinet to corrode or feel dated. Concealed handle designs — recessed pulls or push-open doors — avoid the problem entirely and keep the front clean. They are worth considering anywhere near moisture, especially kitchen and bathroom cabinetry.
The L-shaped corner that becomes dead space
The deep corner of an L-shaped kitchen cabinet is nearly unreachable with plain shelves — things go in and never come out. An aerialship fitting solves it: a mechanised pull-out that swings the entire corner's contents out to you in one movement.
