What aircon work do you need?
Not sure what you need? General servicing keeps a healthy unit running well. Chemical overhaul and steamwash both go deeper for a unit that's cooling weaker, smelling musty, or heavily clogged. Something actually broken, or need a new unit installed — pick that below instead.
Aircon Servicing in Singapore
Singapore's humidity means an aircon works harder than most — skip servicing and dust builds up in the filters and coil, so the unit cools less while drawing more power to compensate. A routine clean is the cheapest insurance your aircon will get.
How often should you service?
For a unit used daily, once every 3 months keeps cooling strong and the power bill in check. Light or occasional use can stretch to every 4 months.
What a general service covers
- ⇒ Remove and wash the indoor filters, drain pan, blower wheel and front panel
- ⇒ Clean the drip tray, drain pipe and indoor unit surface
- ⇒ Check and clean the indoor evaporator coil
- ⇒ Flush the drainage pipe to clear blockages
- ⇒ Test remote, thermostat and fan-speed operation
- ⇒ Check refrigerant gas and air-outlet temperature where needed
Steamwash vs Chemical Overhaul — at a glance
Both go deeper than a general service, but for different problems. Steamwash is a gentler deep-clean for a unit that's basically healthy but cooling weaker or smelling musty. Chemical wash is the full teardown — every part dismantled and cleaned — for a unit that's properly clogged or overdue for one.
Steamwash
- Method
- High-temperature steam, no chemicals
- Best for
- Weaker cooling or a musty smell, on an otherwise healthy unit
- How often
- Once every 1–2 years, alongside regular servicing
Chemical Overhaul
- Method
- Full dismantle — every part cleaned individually
- Best for
- A unit that's heavily clogged or hasn't been serviced in years
- How often
- Only when the unit actually needs it — not a routine cycle
Signs you need a steamwash
- ⇒ A musty smell when the unit switches on
- ⇒ Cooling that's not quite as strong as it used to be
- ⇒ It's been a year or two since your last deep clean
Signs you need a chemical overhaul
- ⇒ Cooling has dropped even after a recent general service
- ⇒ Frequent breakdowns or repeat repairs
- ⇒ Visible mould, heavy dirt, or a strong musty smell
- ⇒ An unexplained jump in your power bill
- ⇒ It's been years since the unit was properly serviced
